What walks, talks, and other nature-related events are coming up in Novato and North Marin in July? Read below for our upcoming events (free, but advanced registration required) as well as our monthly compilation of local guided walks and nature-related events sponsored by other groups.

Sunday, 7/7: Indian Tree Bird Walk

This small group walk at Novato’s only forest preserve is fully booked. Existing participants can review the event details here.

Sunday, 7/14: Mount Burdell Bird Walk

Join Jack and Corrina for a summer walk on Mount Burdell. We’ll enjoy the tag end of the birdsong season and look for young birds from summer breeders, including potential Bullock’s orioles, lark sparrows, house wrens, lazuli buntings, violet-green swallows, and various flycatchers. We’ll also enjoy the year-round attractions of Mount Burdell, including bluebirds, acorn woodpeckers, and the magnificent oak trees.

Tuesday, 7/16: Family Birding at Novato Library

Join the Nature in Novato team as we look for birds in the trees and creek around the Novato library. Kids and families are welcome at this beginner event, where we’ll teach you how to find and recognize some of our most common birds, share tips on how to use binoculars, and learn how different birds are adapted for the places where they live and the foods that they eat.

Sunday, 7/21: Trees of Marin

Presentation at Wild Birds Unlimited

In this in-store talk, we’ll teach you how to identify the 25 or so most common native trees of Marin. We’ll also discuss their natural history, ecological roles, special wonders, identification conundrums, particular lovelinesses, and local tree-viewing destinations.

Saturday, 7/27: Wild Birds Unlimited’s 9th Anniversary

Wild Birds of Unlimited of Novato is celebrating their 9th Anniversary with a day of sales, prizes, refreshments, and a series of special guests from Native Bird Connections and the Bird Rescue Center of Sonoma. In other words: live owls and raptors!

The two most active other groups that regularly offer free public bird walks in our area are Marin Audubon Society and Marin County Parks. Check their calendars for additional scheduled events in other parts of the county; Novato and San Rafael-based activities are listed below. Yes, July is a slow month for nature walks!
